Donse
Don Sebastian... Donse. That's what my uncle called me when I was little… and he still does.

The construction of this cabinet is my interpretation of Hans Johansson, a genius from Dalarna. I've tried several times to replicate the techniques in his furniture. Following a study trip to Dalarna in autumn 2025, and thanks to Per Målare – the cabinetmaker Hans collaborated with – and Hans's daughter Anna Johanna von Platen, we gained access to drawings and furniture that directly inspired this piece.

The parquet inlay on the front is made using Yosegi technique, which I've worked with before and interpreted in my own way. It was completed in January 2021 but hasn't seen the light of day until now. Back then, everything was about perfection, and I struggled with comments that it wasn't "perfect enough."

Three months ago, I found the pieces in a box in the workshop. I was pleasantly surprised – first by the beautiful parquet inlay, but also proud that I'd allowed myself to explore different techniques.

The cabinet is designed to store Polaroid photos I started taking in April 2024 – a way to document my life and preserve both the beautiful and the mundane memories.

The parquet is glued in the centre without much ambition for every piece to fit exactly. For me, it represents that the "flaw" isn't mine, but belongs to whoever chooses to see it.

The little Donse meets a forty-year-old man who wouldn't be himself if life hadn't left its marks.
